Salt & Light: A Guide for Biblical Studies is a quarterly Bible study guide published by Brethren Press and MennoMedia. The sessions are based on the Uniform Series International Sunday School Lessons, produced by the National Council of Churches. Salt & Light discusses the biblical texts through a theological lens that coheres with the Anabaptist orientation of the Mennonite and Church of the Brethren communions, as well as the Radical Pietist history of the Church of the Brethren.
This Quarter's Title: Power to the People
How do we live as a community according to the values Jesus taught amid a dominant culture that’s hostile to them? What happens when we can’t agree and have to divide? How do we balance valuing the truth and living in love? Where are we in God’s ultimate plan for the world? And what can it possibly mean that “God is love”? These are just some of the issues discussed with passion and wisdom in the little cluster of epistles near the end of the New Testament which we call “general epistles.” Sent out as messages from such early pillars as Peter, John the Elder, and Jude the brother of Jesus, their audiences are less clearly identified than those of Paul, hence the title “general.” But because they are directed toward the larger Christian church, we feel included in their message. And as the questions above suggest, the problems and challenges they address are hauntingly familiar and relevant.
