The Seagoing Cowboy

The Heifer Project was Dan West’s vision for shipping livestock to countries devastated by war. That vision would begin the “trip of a lifetime” for over 7,000 young men. These adventurous volunteers came from all over the United States and Canada, and are the subject of a new Brethren Press children’s picture book, entitled The Seagoing Cowboy. Author Peggy Reiff Miller, the granddaughter of one such cowboy, takes us on a trip with the seagoing cowboys as they travel from the quiet countryside to the hustle and bustle of the docks. Feel the pitching and rolling of their ship. Meet the horses and heifers they tend. And see what they discover once they arrive.

Peggy Reiff Miller has been researching, writing, and speaking about the seagoing cowboys and Heifer Project since 2002. Inspired by photos of her Grandpa Abe's 1946 seagoing cowboy trip to Poland, she started interviewing men who had been cowboys and seized the challenge of documenting this little-known history.
