The Brethren New Testament Commentary series aims to give a reliable and readable explanation of the New Testament text, with loyalty to Anabaptist and Pietist values. The book of Timothy and Titus are known as teh Pastoral Epistles because they deal with matters affecting pastors and their congreagations.
First Timothy is a letter of instruction and guidance to the young pastor Timothy who was serving in the church at Ephesus. Timothy was told to deal severly with false teachers, to direct public worship, and to enjoin God's people to carefully choose church officials.
The Letter to Titus emphasizes the importance of good works in the life of the believer. Titus was left in charge of the church on the island of Crete--to ordain church leaders and to set in order things that were lacking in the church.
Second Timothy was written during Paul's second and final imprisonment. We find advice and encouragement for the pastor, given with a sense of urgency, in light of the fact that this was the last letter that Paul wrote.
